The Carlos Morgado Foundation held last Saturday, March 17, the 1st Community Open Forum, in the Complete Primary School Unit 18, of the mapping project of Carlos Morgado Street in Maputo.
THE CONTEXT
"The Maputo Municipal Assembly, meeting at its 55th Plenary Meeting, decided to assign the name of Carlos Morgado to Gago Coutinho Avenue, via which it connects the" Junta "zone to Avenida de Angola" extracted from the Jornal Noticias of October 2, 2011.
THE SOLUTION
Mapping is an important tool for future urban requalification. It is a process of reconversion of abandoned, underutilized or degraded urban spaces through the recovery of old ones, or the creation of new, urbanistic or natural uses and attributes.
For this purpose, it will be necessary to make a survey of urban and natural uses and attributes that impact the street, such as road network conditions, definition of street typology, identification of social facilities, housing density, and many others.
Two forums, a training of mappers residents of adjacent neighborhoods to the street are part of the Mapping Project. The inclusion of the community is essential for defining the potential negative and positive aspects of the street.
It was with this intention that the Carlos Morgado Foundation contacted #MapeandoMeuBairro.
The Forum
Exceeded expectations. Participation was good: lots of people despite the threat of rain, diverse people, community leaders, and even a local association. The atmosphere during the event was good, of collaboration and spirit together. All participants were engaged and active in discussing ideas, even with moments of heated discussion. No one has shown that they have other agendas other than the objectives of requalifying the street and adjacent spaces. The audiovisual documentation of the event was exhaustive, including several interviews. The Forum marks a good start for the project.
The next stage of the project is the training of resident mappers.
