The inflight magazine of Mozambique Airlines, Índico, pays tribute to Carlos Morgado in its July / August 2016 edition. The Carlos Morgado Foundation appreciates the gesture and transcribes the full article below.
Carlos Alberto Sampaio Morgado was born in Tete, on 9 July, 1946. He attended secondary school in Beira and university in Maputo, graduating as an electrical engineer in 1970. From 1971 to 2000, he devoted his knowledge to Mozambican civil aviation, having started in the then DETA, which was abolished in 1980 with the creation of LAM, the company where he would become Deputy General Director. Jaime Almeida graciously accepted relive his memories of Carlos Morgado.
“I met Carlos Morgado, ‘Morgadinho’ to his friends, on 13 July 1971 when he started working at the Maintenance Department of DETA, LAM’s precursor, after being hired as an electronics engineer. He stood out for his intelligence and organizational skills. He was always a great friend of those who befriended and was ready to help. I admired him for his vision of the future and negotiation skills. With DETA already transformed into LAM, in 1980 he was appointed Technical Director and in 1987 he became Deputy General Director, a position he held up to 1999, when he left LAM. He also held the positions of Chairman at the Hotel Polana Casino and Representative Administrator of Linhas Aéreas Africanas at SITA. In 1999, he took part of the organization of the second presidential elections and, from 2000 to 2005, he was the Minister of Trade and Industry. From then up to his last days, he was Chairman at the Pestana Group, in Mozambique. Unfortunately, a disease ended up taking him still very young and with a lot to give, on 15 February 2007. There was a detail that I never realized: he wrote poems! Recently, a book was released, entitled ‘Poemetria’ containing a collection of poems he wrote on paper napkins”.
