Urban requalification is a process of reconversion of abandoned urban spaces, underutilized or degraded through the recovery of old ones, or the creation of new, urbanistic or natural uses and attributes.
The Carlos Morgado Foundation (FCM) invited #MapeandoMeuBairro (MMB), a social initiative that uses open and community mapping as a way to promote the formation and civic participation of Mozambican society. #MapeandoMeuBairro is currently promoted by the HUEIV Architecture Laboratory but intends to be independent in the future. Methodology - Ethical Principles of Mapping Methodology
Mapping has two principles that it can not abdicate: (1) every mapping exercise should contribute to the global community of open data enthusiasts, and (2) any mapping exercise should, to a greater or lesser extent, involve the local residents and/or users of the mapped area. Therefore the accomplishment of the present work depends on the acceptance by the FCM of these two principles.
Principle (1) implies that the data collected and mapped will rather serve the purposes of the FCM, but they will also be made available to the public, which can be accessed through www.openstreetmap.org (OSM) for the purposes to intend. This opening of the data allows the multiplication of actions and the creation of unforeseen synergies at the beginning of the work.
Principle (2) implies that the mapping work is known to users and, as much as possible, they participate in the exercise through the inclusion and training of mappers resident in the area; consultative participation of neighborhood secretaries or city block leaders; interviews with experts in the area; and others.
Mapping Scope
Throughout the meetings a survey area of approximately 100 meters was defined for each side of Eng. Carlos Morgado Street. This extension was then adapted to the existing 100m roadway to facilitate field work. The final survey area has 0.79 km² (793,000 m²) that will be divided into 10 work areas.
